Cybersecurity fundamentals — a free, hands-on course

A structured, beginner-friendly path inspired by the clarity and practice of network certification training. No AI required to grade your work: learn a concept, test yourself and try it in a safe lab.

  • Learn: short, precise explanations with real engineering examples.
  • Practice: guided exercises with Linux, networking, cloud and application security.
  • Check: multiple-choice, matching, ordering, fill-in-the-blank and interactive scenarios with immediate feedback.
  • Review: explanations of correct answers and a clear path to the next lesson.

The 12-week learning path

  1. How computers, networks and the Internet work
  2. TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, TLS and troubleshooting
  3. Linux, permissions, processes and logs
  4. Security principles, threat modeling and risk
  5. Authentication, authorization and identity
  6. Cryptography, certificates and secure communication
  7. Network defense: firewalls and segmentation
  8. Application security: web vulnerabilities and defenses
  9. Cloud security foundations and shared responsibility
  10. Logging, monitoring and incident response
  11. Secure development, automation and security testing
  12. Final practical challenge: secure a small application

The curriculum is being built lesson by lesson. Start with the published materials below; interactive assessments will be added as the course grows.

Engineering background

My everyday toolbox includes PHP/Laravel, Node.js, Python, Flutter, MySQL/PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, Linux and the networking fundamentals I learned working with Cisco equipment. I value designs that can be deployed, observed, maintained and trusted.

I believe practical understanding is built by explaining things, testing assumptions and solving real problems. This site is my technical notebook—and an open invitation for you to study alongside me.
